NEG Application FormHi, thinking of joining the NEG?
Firstly, please look at the application form on the website ... If at the end of this note you feel the NEG is up your street then please complete the form and return it to me (Tom Morton) by email and I will set the process running.
The NEG (national escort group) is governed by British Cycling and in order to officiate on a motorcycle at a British Cycling event the rider has to be a member of the NEG.
All our riders are required to be qualified to a minimum standard of an IAM (Institute of advanced motorcyclist) pass or RoSPA certificate, police advanced certificate or enhances rider scheme gold pass. Clearly you already qualify on this count.
Having satisfied one of those qualifications the next stage is a distance learning package to give you the basic background knowledge of what escorting a cycle race is about, that will be followed by a short written test that is very straight forward and only required to test that you have followed the DVD sent out.
On successful completion of that stage you will be notified of your BC membership number and put in touch with your local regional coordinator. They will arrange for you to come along to at least 3 cycle races where you will be mentored by an qualified NEG member.
You will need to attend at least 3 races before you will be able to move onto you final part 3 test which is an on race assessment of your abilities. Not at all daunting but a necessary procedure to insure a good standard of rider for the team.
The down side is that all the on race training will be at your expense as organisers cannot afford the overheads involved in training new recruits. We can balance some of the out of pocket expenses by involving you in sportive and charity rides that are not classed as road races but require the presence of safety marshals.
Having qualified there are loads of events throughout the year that you could be involved with, and not just local. We are required to provide team for events all over the UK and are very busy all year.
